The skye times mobile

Worried about all those calories consumed in a couch-potato and turkey Christmas…why not burn them away in one go with a spot of New Year celebration coasteering.

Start the New Year by jumping, swimming and diving into the welcoming embrace of the ocean…meeting at 10am in Portree on Thursday January 2.

This is the sixth year that Skye Adventure have given people the chance to work off their Christmas and New Year food extravaganza in this way.

Skye Adventure say: “We'd love it if you joined us for a fun coasteering session followed by cake and hot chocolate!

“We'll provide all the kit, you just need transport, a towel and swimwear. And £30 per person.”

Advance booking is essential, but they will take bookings up to the evening before, they just need to know in advance for wetsuit sizes and other kit.

“We will aim to meet in Portree at 10am on the day then travel to the venue together in convoy.  Venue will be confirmed the day before when we have a look at the sea conditions.

“We'll bring treats for everyone and recommend you bring a flask, we have plenty of great kit to keep you cosy and warm.

“A brilliant way to bring in the New Year!”

The maximum number of people they can take would probably be about 30.

Skye Adventure remind us that the island has more than 400 miles of outstanding coastline to explore and coasteer.   They say coasteering is at its best in Skye when there's a clean northerly 1-2ft swell, which makes the sea into a natural wave machine.

“We've been coasteering in Skye for more than eight years and chose venues that are spectacular, peaceful and off the beaten track.”

“Some basic swimming ability is required, as well as moderate fitness. We will teach you everything else you need to know. There are jumps of all levels, but always the option to stay in the water and swim if you prefer.

“We will equip you with a cosy 5mm wetsuit, rash vest, buoyancy aid, helmet, neoprene gloves, socks and a helmet.”
